How to Choose an ENT Specialist in Malaysia
Written and reviewed by Dr. Thong How Kit (MD (MMA) MSurg ORL-HNS (KPJUC) DOHNS (Glasgow))
Short answer: A good ENT specialist in Malaysia should be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council, have specialist training in ear, nose and throat surgery, practise at a hospital with proper surgical and emergency support, and explain your options clearly before any treatment. Check these points before you book.
Ear, nose and throat problems can affect hearing, breathing, sleep and daily comfort. Some need a quick check, while others need surgery or long-term follow-up. Choosing the right ENT specialist in Malaysia helps you get a correct diagnosis and a treatment plan that fits your condition.
Check the doctor is registered
Every doctor practising in Malaysia must be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Ask for the doctor’s full name and check the register. A registered doctor is recognised as qualified to practise medicine, but registration alone does not show specialist training in ENT.
Look for ENT specialist training
ENT is a surgical specialty. Look for a doctor who has completed postgraduate training in otorhinolaryngology, usually described as an ENT consultant or Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist. For head and neck problems such as neck lumps, thyroid or salivary gland conditions, check whether the doctor also has head and neck surgery training.
Check the hospital and support
Find out where the doctor operates. A hospital with operating theatres, endoscopy, imaging and emergency care is important if you need surgery or if a complication occurs. Ask whether the doctor operates at that hospital and whether follow-up care is available there.
Ask about experience with your condition
Some ENT specialists focus on ear problems such as hearing loss and vertigo, while others see more sinus, throat or voice cases. Ask how often they treat your specific condition and whether they offer the tests you may need, such as hearing tests, endoscopy or a sleep study referral.
Look for clear explanations
A good specialist explains what they think is happening, the treatment options, the expected benefits and risks, and what happens if you choose not to have treatment yet. You should feel able to ask questions without being rushed.
Questions to ask at your first visit
- What do you think is causing my symptoms?
- What tests do I need, and what will they tell us?
- What treatment options are available, and which do you recommend?
- What are the risks and what is the recovery like?
- What should I do if my symptoms get worse before my next visit?
- Will I see the same doctor for follow-up?
Where to find an ENT specialist
You can ask your GP for a referral, check hospital websites for their ENT consultants, or search for an ENT clinic in your area. If you live in Negeri Sembilan, you can read about Klinik Pakar ENT Seremban, an ENT clinic inside KPJ Seremban Specialist Hospital, where consultations and surgical care are available in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see an ENT specialist in Malaysia?
Many patients see an ENT specialist directly, but some insurance plans require a referral from a GP. Check your policy before you book.

Many ENT specialists also perform surgery. Ask the doctor whether they perform the procedure you need, and where it will be done.
When should I see an ENT specialist urgently?
Seek urgent care if you have sudden hearing loss, severe ear or throat pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding from the nose or ear, or a neck lump that is growing quickly. In an emergency, call 999.
